Our Research

We are committed to improving patient outcomes through the pursuit of high-quality surgical research. Led by Mr Michael Hii, our research team includes surgeons, students undertaking research by higher degree, surgical trainees, junior medical staff and medical students. Our research activities are also strongly supported by our research coordinator, Dr Lynn Chong and research assistant, Lilian Taylor. Having completed a PhD in epithelial stem cell biology, Lynn has a thorough understanding of research processes and is responsible for the development, coordination and administration of research projects and clinical trials within the unit. Her role involves supporting surgical residents and medical students to develop a sound foundation in clinical research. The research team meets weekly in order to discuss new projects and to provide students the opportunity to present their research. To date, the unit has supported numerous MDRP students and is about to commence the supervision of three PhD students. We warmly welcome enquiries from prospective students and potential collaborators. Enquiries should be directed to Dr Lynn Chong.

What To Expect

Following this MDM your treatment planning will begin. You may meet many different medical professionals who will all play an important role in your care. Every patient will have a different experience but below is a brief overview of the appointments you can expect and who you will meet.

Surgeon At this appointment you will meet with the surgeon, fellow or registrar to discuss your diagnosis and treatment options. If this includes surgery, the surgeon will talk you through the operation, risks and benefits so that you can make informed decisions.
Medical Oncologist/Radiation Oncologist If your treatment involves pre-operative chemotherapy (known as neoadjuvant treatment), you will meet the medical oncologist. At this point you may also meet the radiation oncologist. The oncologists work collaboratively with the surgeons to ensure you are receiving the best care possible.
Dietitian Some of you will be referred to a dietitian at the time of diagnosis. This will give you an opportunity to optimise your nutrition prior to treatment and allow ongoing support both in and out of hospital.
Cancer Nurse Coordinator Your meeting with the cancer nurse may coincide with any of the above appointments depending on your treatment. Here, you will be provided with contact details for a central contact at the hospital, educational resources and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you have about your care.

Please Note: If you are having surgery, you will also meet a number of people involved in your “Pre-Operative” planning and assessment. Your Cancer Nurse Coordinator will take you through this in more detail during your appointment.
